Math Department Calculator Use Policy
Dear Parents:
We will be using the TI-84 Plus graphing calculator in our math classes this year. I will provide a set of calculators for use during my class period. However, you and your child must first agree to the terms and conditions below.
TERMS & CONDITIONS Each student will be assigned a specific calculator to use in the class:
· this year. This is the only calculator he/she has permission to use.
· The student will check the calculator for damage or improper functioning upon receiving it and will report any such problems to the teacher immediately.
· The student will return the assigned calculator to the teacher un-damaged at the end of the period. Damage includes, but is not limited to:
Ø Removal of batteries
Ø Removal of the lid
Ø Removal of the battery cover
Ø Cracking, scratching or writing on the screen
Ø Downloading ANYTHING to the RAM or Flash Memory
Ø Damaging the link cable port
· Improper use includes, but is not limited to:
Ø Playing games on the calculator in the classroom
Ø Entering unnecessary information in the RAM or Flash Memory using calculator keys
Ø Leaving improper messages on the Home Screen for other users of the calculators
· Students will be referred to their assistant principal if they cause damage or if they do not return their calculator. Punishment for a damaged/lost/stolen calculator may range from partial restitution up to the full replacement cost of the calculator along with probable disciplinary action
· The student will not borrow the class calculator if he/she refuses to follow the in-class procedure.
A TI-84 and/or TI-84 plus CALCULATOR AT HOME There are many advantages to purchasing your own TI-84/TI-84 Plus graphing calculator.
1) A calculator for use at home, to complete homework, extra practice with calculator.
2) TI-84/TI-84 plus is used in future math courses (Geometry, Algebra 2, Math Models, PreCalculus)
3) TI-84/TI-84plus is calculator allowed on the TAKS test
4) TI-84/TI-84 plus is often used in entry-level college math courses (College Algebra)
You can find the TI-84, TI-84 Plus, and TI-84 Plus (Silver Edition), in stores such as Office Depot, Target, Best Buy and Wal-mart. Prices generally range from $79 - $109.
